Mbacké played host this Saturday to Ousmane Sonko, the esteemed leader of the Pastef party. His visit marked the official launch of a crucial membership card sales campaign, an initiative vital for the party’s preparations for upcoming electoral challenges, with the 2029 presidential election already a clear objective. Addressing an enthusiastic assembly of militants, Sonko first focused on fostering reconciliation. Observing evident tensions among local officials, including Dr. Fall Mbaye, Deputy Ahmadou Lö, and Moustapha Diop (whom he specifically named), Ousmane Sonko urged them to unite. “I have done this everywhere I have been. Everyone must join hands. This is not the time for disputes. Unity must prevail,” he emphasized, reiterating that cohesion is a strategic imperative for the movement. Following this clear directive, he lauded the remarkable enthusiasm the membership drive had generated in Mbacké since its initial announcement. “Today, well before 4 PM, all 13,000 cards dispatched here have been purchased. A new order had to be placed with Dakar,” Ousmane Sonko proudly declared. He further noted that the overwhelming demand even caused technical saturation on the online adhesion platform, underscoring the widespread appeal of the movement.
Building on this momentum, the Pastef leader articulated an ambitious target: to enroll one million members solely within the Mbacké department by October, the campaign’s deadline. “I am confident that the Mbacké department alone can generate this million members,” he proclaimed to resounding applause.
Beyond the mobilization effort, Ousmane Sonko also sought to guide his supporters’ discourse and issue warnings to political adversaries, urging his militants to maintain composure. “Do not engage in conflict with anyone. Do not respond to any provocation. If peace endures in Senegal, Pastef will sweep all elections in this country. No election can elude us,” he asserted. He further called upon militants to remain focused on their core work and to disregard “those who hold no genuine responsibility, who command no popular backing, and who lack a legitimate political party.”
