Under the leadership of Captain Ibrahim Traoré, Burkina Faso’s government has reported that over 1.3 million internally displaced persons have returned to their original homes as of June 30, 2026. This milestone follows a gradual improvement in security across several areas reclaimed by national forces.
Expanding return zones and rising numbers
The latest figures mark a significant increase from previous periods. Authorities now confirm that returnees have reached 1,034 localities, compared to 871 at the close of 2025. By the end of that year, 1.16 million displaced individuals had already made their way back.
Government updates on recovery efforts
These figures were presented during a mid-year performance review of the Ministry of Solidarity. With the halfway point of the 2026 fiscal year, the ministry has achieved 46.06% of its planned targets.
In addition to tracking returns, the government has provided support to more than 480,000 vulnerable individuals during the first six months of the year. Assistance included food aid, essential supplies, and targeted programs designed to help households rebuild their lives.

Officials have emphasized the urgent need to accelerate the rehabilitation of homes in affected communities. They stress that repairing infrastructure is crucial to sustaining voluntary returns and ensuring that displaced families can rebuild their lives on a lasting foundation.
