Regional alliance responds to nigerian president’s security comments
The diplomatic wing of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) has formally protested comments made by Nigerian President Bola Tinubu regarding security challenges in the region. Burkina Faso’s Foreign Minister, Jean Marie Traoré, summoned Nigeria’s Chargé d’Affaires in Ouagadougou to address the remarks, joined by counterparts from Mali and Niger, both AES members, to present a unified response.
The diplomatic démarche follows President Tinubu’s statements on July 30, where he suggested that escalating insecurity within AES territories was directly contributing to Nigeria’s own security crisis. He pointed to a surge in terrorist attacks and kidnappings in Nigeria as evidence of this spillover effect.
In a strongly worded response, Foreign Minister Traoré conveyed the “deep regret of the AES nations” toward what he described as “inaccurate and hastily drawn conclusions”. He emphasized that such remarks undermined the spirit of solidarity essential among neighboring states facing a shared threat.
“We expect our partners to recognize the complexity of this crisis,” Traoré stated. “The situation is not one-sided, nor can it be reduced to simplistic narratives. Blaming neighboring countries risks breeding resentment and distracting from the real sources of insecurity.”
He went on to affirm that Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger are not responsible for their security challenges but are paying the highest price for them. “Our enemies lie beyond our borders, and our response must reflect the brotherhood that binds our peoples.”
Despite the sharp tone, Traoré clarified that the AES’s intent was not confrontation but “a call for honest dialogue and genuine cooperation”. “Only through sincere collaboration can we address the root causes of terrorism and restore lasting peace in the region,” he asserted.
The Nigerian representative acknowledged the AES’s stance, praising its commitment to dialogue and solidarity in combating terrorism. He pledged to relay the alliance’s concerns to Abuja, while acknowledging the AES’s ongoing anti-terrorism efforts.
