The Speaker of Senegal’s National Assembly, Ousmane Sonko, addressed the public this past Thursday following a landmark decision by the Constitutional Council. The Council declared unconstitutional a constitutional reform bill that had been approved by lawmakers, prompting Sonko to acknowledge the ruling as binding for all parties involved.
In a statement, Sonko emphasized that despite differing interpretations of the Council’s reasoning, the decision must be respected. « Beyond any commentary or analysis of the motivations behind this ruling, one fact remains undeniable: this decision applies to everyone. So be it,» he declared.
Reflecting on the episode, the National Assembly leader underscored the importance of institutional roles. « When institutions fulfill their mandates within their designated spheres, no crisis can arise,» he noted.
Sonko went on to reaffirm the legislature’s commitment to its constitutional duties. « The National Assembly will continue to carry out its mission in full: laws will be passed or rejected to honor the promises made to this resilient and honorable nation,» he affirmed.
