The President of Senegal’s National Assembly, Ousmane Sonko, has publicly acknowledged the Constitutional Council’s decision declaring the recently passed constitutional reform law unconstitutional. Reacting to the ruling by the seven constitutional judges, Sonko emphasized that the decision is binding on all and must be respected without exception.
In a statement released on Thursday, he underscored the finality of the judgment, stating, “Regardless of the opinions or reactions the ruling may provoke, one truth remains: this decision applies to everyone. We accept it.”
Addressing the broader implications for Senegal’s institutions, Sonko highlighted the importance of each branch operating within its constitutional mandate to prevent crises. “When institutions fulfill their roles within their designated spheres, no crisis can arise,” he noted.
Reaffirming the legislature’s commitment to its duties, Sonko declared, “The National Assembly will continue to exercise its mandate fully. Laws will be debated, passed, or rejected in service to the Senegalese people, who have entrusted us with their trust.”
