Political storm in Senegal as Abdourahmane Diouf slams Ousmane Sonko

Political tension in Senegal as Abdourahmane Diouf and Ousmane Sonko clash

The political landscape in Senegal has been rocked by sharp criticism from Ousmane Sonko directed at President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, prompting a fierce response from government minister Dr Abdourahmane Diouf. The latter condemned Sonko’s remarks as emblematic of intellectual emptiness, warning that such rhetoric poses a serious threat to the nation’s democratic foundations.

Ousmane Sonko’s latest verbal attacks on President Bassirou Diomaye Faye have intensified political tensions across Senegal. During a recent party gathering in Touba, the Pastef leader went so far as to label the head of state as a “manipulable president,” a comment that has since drawn sharp rebukes from within the government.

In a scathing public statement released the following day, Dr Abdourahmane Diouf, who serves in the cabinet, launched a blistering critique against the National Assembly president—without naming him directly—highlighting what he described as a disturbing pattern of reckless behavior and hollow rhetoric.

His statement read: « Thiey Sénégal! This is what happens when a self-serving deputy ascends to the chair of the National Assembly; procedures are brushed aside, substantive analysis crumbles under the weight of intellectual vacuity, and the truth is sacrificed at the altar of reckless manipulation. The Republic must stand above all else—nothing less than the Republic!»
