After settling in Morocco following his departure from office two and a half years ago, former Senegalese President Macky Sall will visit Dakar on July 17, where he will be received by his successor, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. In a social media statement, Sall confirmed this meeting is part of his ongoing consultations ahead of his candidacy for the position of United Nations Secretary-General.
«As part of the consultations and visits I am conducting regarding my candidacy for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations, I will travel to Senegal this Friday, July 17, 2026. I extend my deepest gratitude to President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye for this opportunity to engage in dialogue. I also express my sincere thanks to the people of Senegal for their unwavering support and encouragement since the announcement of my candidacy,» Sall wrote.
This upcoming meeting between Sall and President Faye has ignited discussions, particularly among the most vocal supporters of the Pastef movement led by Ousmane Sonko. Some critics argue that welcoming Sall could imply endorsement of pre-election unrest and alleged mismanagement of the country’s economic and financial resources.
It is worth noting that Sall’s candidature for the UN Secretary-General role has not been officially endorsed by Senegal, but rather by Burundi. Sall served as Senegal’s President from 2012 to 2024. Since leaving office and relocating to Marrakech, he has been actively engaging with global leaders in preparation for his bid to lead the UN’s administrative arm.
