Nearly four months have passed since the Africa Cup of Nations final, a match initially won by Senegal after extra time (1-0) but later awarded to Morocco (3-0) by the CAF appeals jury. Despite this decision, the situation for Senegalese supporters incarcerated in Rabat remains unchanged. While three individuals have been released, the primary instigators, those who invaded the pitch to confront stadium security and then the police, face continued detention.

During a television interview, Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye addressed the plight of the Lions de la Teranga fans, who received sentences ranging from six months to a year in prison. He asserted, « It would be a mistake to assume we haven’t done enough for our supporters held in Morocco. They have my full backing », underscoring his unwavering support for the detained individuals.

Senegal’s president seeks royal pardon from Moroccan monarch

Senegalese authorities have exhausted every avenue in their efforts to secure the release of the supporters arrested following the match on January 18 in Rabat. President Bassirou Diomaye Faye noted, « We must respect the judicial processes of other nations. However, we believe their conviction is severe and unjust. Typically, such cases conclude with fines… This situation transcends the usual sporting context. »

Subsequently, the Senegalese government aimed to alleviate tensions with the Cherifian Kingdom, which adopted an unyielding stance after images of rare violence for a major football competition circulated. Senegal did not contest the penalties imposed by the Moroccan judiciary. President Faye revealed, « I have appealed to the King of Morocco for a pardon for our supporters. We initiated mediation with all stakeholders… We even engaged the religious dimension. » He confirmed writing to King Mohamed VI. Despite these extensive diplomatic and religious efforts, the situation remains unresolved.
