Somalia’s looming famine catastrophe
The Somalia famine crisis deepens as the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) issues stark warnings of an impending humanitarian disaster. Nearly 6.5 million people are already grappling with severe food insecurity, exacerbated by relentless drought conditions that continue to devastate livelihoods across the country.
The collapse of pastoralism
Two consecutive seasons of failed rainfall have plunged Somalia back into the brink of catastrophic hunger levels not seen since 2022. The pastoralist economy, which sustains over 60% of the population, is crumbling under the weight of mass livestock losses. Families are losing both their food sources and critical income, forcing many to abandon their homes in search of survival. Displacement camps are swelling as communities flee the unfolding crisis.
In Dhusamareb, a 61-year-old herder recounts losing 90% of his goats and two-thirds of his camels within a year. « I fear my people will meet the same fate as my animals, » he shares. Meanwhile, in the Nugal region, a 19-year-old mother fled after her livestock perished, desperate to protect her children from starvation.
Mass displacement strains humanitarian aid
Over 500,000 people were displaced in 2025 alone, driven by both conflict and drought, particularly in the Al-Miskat hills of Bari region in Puntland. As humanitarian funding dwindles, aid organizations are scaling back essential programs—food distribution, clean water access, and healthcare—just as needs skyrocket.
Since November 2025, the ICRC has provided lifesaving support to over 5,000 displaced families. Efforts include rehabilitating boreholes in Bari and Sanaag, supplying equipment to restore water wells, and treating severely malnourished children at the Kismayo stabilization center. The organization also supports 11 clinics operated by the Somali Red Crescent Society.
Red Cross issues urgent call to action
« Without immediate rainfall and a significant boost in humanitarian aid, millions could be pushed into deeper food emergencies, » warns the ICRC. Somalia stands at a critical juncture: every passing day without intervention escalates the risk of a full-blown humanitarian catastrophe.
