The medical and research landscape in West Africa is on the verge of a historic transformation. Sorbonne University, a leading academic and medical institution in Europe, is turning its attention to Bénin. A high-profile delegation from the French university, led by its president, visited the Centre Hospitalier International de Calavi (CHIC) to explore this new flagship of Béninese public health.
This strategically important visit outlines the framework for a promising alliance aimed at bridging the academic and hospital worlds to boost healthcare delivery and medical training in the sub-region.
World-class technical infrastructure
Inaugurated to redefine health standards and drastically reduce medical evacuations abroad, CHIC left a strong impression on its guests. Spread over more than 40,000 m² with a capacity exceeding 430 beds, the centre integrates state-of-the-art imaging and treatment technologies, particularly in medical oncology, radiotherapy, and complex cardiology.
From the care units to the medico-technical hub, the European delegation observed the rigorous infrastructure that meets the strictest international norms.
“Our shared ambition is to reinforce excellence in care, training, and research for the benefit of Béninese and African populations.”
Towards customised training and advanced research
Beyond a courtesy visit, this meeting marks the start of an active exploration phase. The goal is clear: jointly design specialised training programmes that directly address the cutting-edge needs of CHIC, while building on existing collaborations in Bénin.
By combining Sorbonne University’s academic expertise with CHIC’s technological potential, Bénin is not just acquiring a modern hospital; it is sustainably establishing a reference centre and a hub of attraction for the medicine of tomorrow on the African continent.
