Tchad and Russia deepen ties in defence and diplomacy
A landmark agreement on visa exemptions for diplomats and preparations for the Russia-Africa Summit highlight the growing strategic partnership between Tchad and Moscow.
During a press briefing in Moscow on 14 July, Tchadian Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Sabre Fadoul and his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov underscored the need for stronger defence collaboration between their nations. The discussions, centred on regional security, resulted in a new agreement granting visa exemptions for holders of diplomatic passports—an important milestone in bilateral relations.
Lavrov also addressed global tensions, including allegations of Ukrainian “terrorism” in the Azov and Black Seas, while reaffirming Russia’s commitment to joint counter-terrorism efforts with African partners. Tchadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby is set to attend the Russia-Africa Summit in October, further solidifying Tchad’s role in this evolving partnership.
Minister Fadoul praised Russia’s contributions to stabilising the Sahel region, expressing optimism that strengthened cooperation will yield tangible results in combating extremism across the Sahel-Sahara belt.
