On Tuesday, May 12, 2026, Togo‘s head of state, Faure Gnassingbé, paid an official visit to Kampala, Uganda, to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Yoweri Museveni, who was re-elected following the January 15, 2026 general election.
The event, themed “Safeguarding achievements and advancing toward upper-middle-income country status”, brought together African heads of state alongside delegations from Europe, Asia, and the Americas.

Faure Gnassingbé extended his warmest congratulations to Yoweri Museveni and wished him success in his new term. In response, Museveni praised the Togolese leader’s participation, highlighting the strong cooperative ties between Lomé and Kampala.
The discussions also covered regional security challenges in the Great Lakes area. As the African Union mediator for the crisis in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gnassingbé reiterated his commitment to continuing consultations with regional stakeholders to foster a lasting resolution to the conflict.
Museveni commended Togo‘s diplomatic approach, emphasizing its dedication to dialogue and peaceful conflict resolution. The visit underscores Togo‘s ongoing role as a proactive participant in Africa’s peacebuilding and regional integration initiatives.
