Togo’s top leader reinforces commitment to security operations in Savanes

The President of the Council and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, conducted a strategic visit on May 7, 2026, to the Koundjoaré operation zone in northern Togo. This on-site inspection was part of an ongoing assessment of security measures deployed against terrorist threats in the Savanes region.

Upon landing around 10 a.m., he was welcomed by the Koundjoaré operation commander. The visit included a stop at the Operational Command Post, where a detailed briefing outlined the current security landscape, active operations, and the challenges faced by deployed troops.

Following the debriefing, the Commander-in-Chief issued new strategic directives aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of field units. The tour continued to the forward operational post in Tchamonga, near the eastern border. There, after a tactical sand table presentation, Faure Gnassingbé addressed the troops, praising their bravery, professionalism, and unwavering dedication to protecting the nation’s sovereignty.

The President commended the forces for their achievements amid persistent regional security challenges and highlighted the importance of cross-border cooperation with neighboring countries in countering terrorism.

Reaffirming full military support for Operation Koundjoaré, he assured troops that their operational needs would be progressively addressed to boost mission readiness. He urged them to maintain high vigilance, discipline, and resolve against destabilization efforts in West Africa.

The Colonel Kombaté Latiémbé, Koundjoaré operation commander, welcomed the visit, thanking the President for the resources provided to defense and security forces. He vowed to continue securing both populations and national territory with determination.

Beyond military action, this visit underscores Togo’s holistic approach to tackling security threats. Alongside defense forces, multiple state mechanisms—including the Interministerial Committee for Preventing and Combating Violent Extremism (CIPLEV) and the Savanes Region Emergency Program (PURS)—are strengthening community resilience in affected areas.

This effort is complemented by diplomatic and mediation initiatives led by the President to promote peace, dialogue, and stability across West Africa.
