March 26, 2026 – The World Bank has given its approval for a 150 million dollar credit from the International Development Association (IDA), aimed at sustaining crucial health and education services across Mali. This financial injection is designed to confront the climatic, security, and economic difficulties that the nation has experienced in recent years.
The Emergency Access to Essential Services Project in Mali will uphold the operational integrity of national and regional health facilities. This includes funding their running costs, ensuring the supply of vital vaccines and essential medicines, and providing free healthcare for women of reproductive age and children under five. Furthermore, it will enhance the capabilities of health personnel to respond to escalating health risks linked to climate change. In the education sector, the project will intervene throughout the academic journey, providing educational materials, offering school grants to the most vulnerable students, and facilitating national examinations.
This initiative plays a pivotal role in advancing the World Bank Group’s employment agenda by safeguarding human capital.
“By preserving access to health and education services within a context of severe budgetary constraints, this project protects the pool of future workers and their productive capacity,” explained Clara de Sousa, World Bank Group’s Division Director for Mali. “Healthy, educated children, alongside healthy mothers, constitute a sustainable and productive workforce.”
The project is anticipated to positively impact 2.3 million beneficiaries who will gain access to fundamental health services, with a specific focus on 1.4 million women and 391,395 children under the age of five. In the educational sphere, 1.1 million students will receive support for their schooling, as well as access to national examinations under established standards, fostering educational continuity and the advancement of human capital.
This operation complements the ongoing efforts of development partners and is founded on extensive consultations and dedicated coordination mechanisms, ensuring an effective and harmonious implementation.
