The Chadian Catholic bishops have issued a strong call for dialogue to break the political impasse gripping their nation. In a statement released Tuesday, May 6, the prelates expressed deep concern over the country’s escalating political tensions, emphasizing that trust-building measures are essential for national reconciliation.

The bishops firmly stated: “Sincere and inclusive dialogue remains the only viable path to resolve the current crisis.” Their plea comes amid a surge in violent intercommunal clashes across Chad, particularly in regions like Dar Tama in Wadi Fira and Guera.

Recent Violence Sparks Bishops’ Condemnation

The declaration follows a deadly attack on May 5 against a military base in Barka Toulorom, situated in the Lake Chad area. According to an official government statement, the assault resulted in at least 23 fatalities. Less than two weeks prior, on April 26, intercommunal violence in eastern Chad claimed at least 42 lives.

The bishops unequivocally condemned these brutal incidents, reaffirming the sanctity of human life and declaring that “no one has the right to take it.” They stressed that “violence cannot be an acceptable response to disagreements; it only deepens divisions and fuels further instability.”

Call for Respect of Democratic Principles and Human Rights

The bishops also voiced alarm over the recent wave of arrests targeting opposition figures and critical voices. They warned that such actions “undermine democratic values, freedom of expression, and human rights—cornerstones of a cohesive society. These measures weaken social cohesion and threaten the nation’s collective future,” they cautioned.

Highlighting the importance of pluralism, the bishops underscored that “diversity should be a strength, not an obstacle,” in building a unified and resilient nation. They argued that overcoming challenges like exclusion, injustice, and violence requires embracing dialogue, justice, and mutual respect.

Commitment to Constructive Discussions for Lasting Peace

The bishops reiterated their unwavering belief in constructive, inclusive dialogue as the cornerstone for resolving the crisis. “All stakeholders must engage in meaningful discussions based on truth, mutual respect, and a commitment to peaceful solutions,” they urged. Such dialogue, they emphasized, is “essential for reconciliation and sustainable peace in Chad.”

The prelates called on authorities to demonstrate wisdom and restraint, fostering an environment conducive to trust and reconciliation. “Peace is a precious gift that we must all work together to preserve,” they noted.

The bishops extended their heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and urged the nation to unite in compassion and solidarity during this challenging period.
