Dakar court takes on Ousmane Sonko over Touba remarks

A collective representing descendants of Serigne Touba has filed a complaint against Ousmane Sonko, accusing him of damaging the reputation of the holy city of Touba with unverified claims about illicit funds circulating there. The group seeks a thorough investigation to verify the allegations and protect the dignity of the city’s residents.
The Collectif des petits-fils de Serigne Touba has formally lodged a complaint against Ousmane Sonko at the Dakar High Court’s public prosecutor’s office. Registered under case number 12562, the action follows recent statements attributed to the PASTEF leader during the inauguration of his party’s headquarters over the weekend. Sonko reportedly claimed that “dirty money has entered the holy city of Touba,” a remark the group considers defamatory.
Through spokesmen Serigne Modou Maroun Niang and Serigne Mourtalla Bousso, the collective argues that Sonko’s words undermine the honor, reputation, and moral standing of Touba and its people. They emphasize that the city, founded by Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba, is built on principles of faith, integrity, honesty, and justice. The complaint urges prosecutors to investigate the claims, assess their legal implications, and if necessary, pursue charges such as defamation or spreading false information.
The group is calling for Sonko to be questioned to clarify his remarks and provide any evidence supporting his allegations. They insist that a full inquiry be conducted and that legal action be taken if the accusations prove unfounded or harmful to Touba’s image.
