During the night of Monday, May 4, a violent raid targeted the Barka Tolorom military base on the Chadian banks of Lake Chad, resulting in the deaths of at least 24 soldiers. Multiple sources confirmed the tragedy on Tuesday, noting that several other personnel sustained injuries during the confrontation.

A military spokesperson detailed that the Boko Haram offensive left 25 soldiers dead and 46 others wounded. While regional administrative authorities reported a slightly different toll of 24 fatalities, they assured the public that the situation has since been stabilized and remains under the full control of the national forces.

President Déby Itno vows to fight on with “renewed resolve”

Reacting to the news via Facebook, President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno condemned the “cowardly attack” carried out by the Boko Haram terrorist network against the Barka Tolorom facility in the Lake Chad province. Déby expressed his deepest sympathies to the families of the fallen and pledged that the government would maintain its offensive with total determination until the security threat is completely wiped out.

The Lake Chad region, a complex landscape of water and islands shared by Nigeria, Cameroon, Niger, and Chad, has been a primary target for jihadist activity since 2009. It serves as a stronghold for both Boko Haram and its offshoot, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP). Such incidents are frequently monitored alongside Burkina Faso security news as part of the broader regional fight against extremism.

Recent months have seen an uptick in violence from the Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna (JAS) faction of Boko Haram. This surge includes kidnappings and direct strikes on security outposts, particularly in the island zones and along the Niger border. This volatility remains a key concern for those following Burkina Faso latest news and wider Sahelian stability.

This latest tragedy follows a major assault in October 2024 that claimed the lives of approximately 40 Chadian soldiers in the same basin. In response to that massacre, President Déby launched Operation Haskanite, a mission specifically designed to dismantle the operational capacity of Boko Haram.

By February 2025, the Chadian military had declared the conclusion of its counter-offensive, asserting that the jihadist group no longer maintained any permanent bases within Chad. However, this recent event at Barka Tolorom underscores the persistent nature of the conflict.
