French EU lawmaker condemns anti-LGBTQ+ crackdown in Senegal
French politician Manon Aubry, a Left-wing MEP and leader of the European Parliament’s Left Group, has spoken out against the escalating persecution of LGBTQ+ individuals in Senegal. She is urging immediate action from France to protect those at risk and support victims of this growing crisis.
Outcry over Senegal’s anti-LGBTQ+ laws
In a powerful statement on social media, Manon Aubry condemned what she describes as a targeted persecution of LGBTQ+ people in Senegal. She highlighted a recent legal amendment that now criminalizes same-sex relationships, imposing prison sentences of five to ten years for those convicted.
« Homosexuality is not a crime. Yet in Senegal, a discriminatory law now punishes LGBTQ+ individuals with severe prison terms. This is unacceptable. I stand firmly with those suffering under this oppression and call for urgent international action, » she declared.
Call for France to intervene
The French politician also voiced support for a French national currently detained in Senegal on charges related to LGBTQ+ rights violations. She emphasized the need for diplomatic pressure and humanitarian assistance, stating:
« My full solidarity goes to the detained French citizen. France must act swiftly to secure their release and provide asylum to Senegalese refugees fleeing this persecution. »
The case has intensified calls for European leaders to address human rights concerns in the region, particularly in light of recent legal developments in Senegal.
