After more than four decades of exemplary military service, the first five-star general in the history of Bénin is stepping down from active duty. This is the portrait of a man of duty whose steadfastness during national crises has become legendary, though his path remains forever marked by the personal tragedy of December 7, 2025.
Forty-three years. For nearly half a century, he has monitored the skies and guarded the security of the state. By taking his leave, Air Force General Bertin Bada does more than just turn a page in his own life; he concludes a significant chapter in the history of the Benin Armed Forces (FAB).
Having joined the ranks in the early 1980s, this distinguished pilot and high-level instructor established himself over the decades as the cornerstone of the national security framework. From the cockpits of the Air Force to the refined offices of the presidency’s Military Cabinet, he embodied a rare doctrine: absolute loyalty to democratic institutions.
A symbol of republican integrity
In a sub-region often troubled by instability, the career of General Bada serves as a reminder that a soldier’s greatness is found in their respect for the laws of the Republic. Respected by his peers and political leaders alike for his moral discipline and managerial integrity, he climbed every rank with precision.
From Chief of Staff of the Air Force to Director of the Military Cabinet under Patrice Talon, his recent appointment as Defense and Security Advisor by President Romuald Wadagni served as the crowning achievement of his vital expertise. In February 2026, he officially entered the military pantheon of Bénin by becoming the very first senior officer to wear five stars since the country’s independence. This historic distinction honors both the skilled aviator and the tireless servant of the State.
The sacrifice of December 7, 2025: a national tragedy
However, this life of rectitude was met with the senseless violence of those who sought to destabilize the Nation. During the tragic night of December 6 to 7, 2025, while a group of mutineers attempted to overthrow the republican government, the general’s residence was stormed.
It was during this cowardly assault that his wife, Berthe Kougblénou (Bada), was fatally wounded. His companion since their school days in 1982, she fell on the front lines, a collateral victim of the hatred of insurgents who targeted the very foundations of democracy in Bénin through her husband.
During official tributes, the highest judicial and constitutional authorities of the country noted that she passed away in the interest of the Republic. For the general, this painful loss did not diminish his resolve. A wounded but upright dignitary, he continued to serve, channeling his private grief into a final sacred duty for the fatherland.
The legacy of an aviation legend
As he finally hangs up his uniform for a well-earned retirement, Bertin Bada leaves behind a modernized Air Force and a new generation of officers trained in the school of integrity.
When looking back at his career, history will remember him as a soldier in the noblest sense: a man who gave everything to Bénin, including his family’s peace, without ever wavering from his original oath. The army loses a leader, but the Nation retains a role model.
