Mali football team parts ways with Belgian coach after major tournaments

The Mali national football team has officially concluded its collaboration with Belgian coach Tom Saintfiet. The Malian Football Federation (Femafoot) announced the decision on Tuesday evening, bringing an end to the mandate of the 53-year-old tactician who took charge in August 2024.

Saintfiet’s tenure saw the team fall short in two major competitions. The Malian side failed to secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while also suffering a quarter-final exit at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after a narrow defeat to Senegal.

Femafoot lauds departing coach’s contributions

In an official statement released on social media, Mahazou Cisset, the newly elected president of Femafoot, extended his gratitude to Saintfiet for his dedication and leadership. The federation acknowledged the coach’s unwavering commitment, professionalism, and ability to unite the squad during challenging circumstances. The statement read: «Your tenure was marked by consistent effort, exemplary professionalism, and remarkable determination in fulfilling your duties. Despite a demanding environment, you fostered team cohesion, structured technical work, and proudly represented the Mali national team with dignity.»

Next steps for Malian football

The federation has initiated a recruitment process to identify Saintfiet’s successor. Interested candidates are invited to submit their applications by May 10, as Mali prepares for its future football challenges.
