Mali opposition: Mountaga Tall’s son missing after his father’s abduction

The situation in Bamako has taken a dramatic turn with the simultaneous disappearance of prominent opposition leader and attorney Mountaga Tall and his eldest son, Cheick Mamadou Tall. Their legal team has issued an urgent statement condemning what they describe as “illegal” actions amid escalating political tensions under Mali’s current military administration.

Second disappearance follows Mountaga Tall’s abduction

Cheick Mamadou Tall vanished on May 16 after receiving a phone call, just two weeks after his father Mountaga Tall was abducted in Bamako on May 2. The family reports that Mountaga Tall was forcibly taken by masked men, with no official information regarding his whereabouts or the circumstances of his kidnapping.

Prominent critic of military rule

A key figure in the M5 movement that played a pivotal role in the 2020 ousting of President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta, Mountaga Tall initially supported the military junta before becoming one of its most vocal opponents. Currently defending several soldiers accused of “attempting to destabilize state institutions,” he has also challenged the junta’s decision to dissolve political parties in court.

Growing political instability

These disappearances occur against a backdrop of heightened security threats. Late April saw coordinated attacks by the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM) – Al-Qaeda’s Sahel affiliate – and Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) rebels targeting strategic military positions. In response, the Tall family’s legal representatives are demanding immediate action from administrative and judicial authorities to locate the two men and clarify their status.
