Civilian casualties in Mali drone strikes highlight deepening security crisis

Sunday’s drone strikes by Mali’s armed forces in Téné left at least ten civilians dead, including young people preparing for a traditional collective wedding. The incident exposes the worsening security turmoil gripping the country.

On Sunday, Malian military drones targeted Téné in the San region, central Mali, where local residents were assembling for a community wedding celebration. The attack resulted in multiple civilian fatalities, sending shockwaves through the already fragile region.

The strikes occurred amid intensified militant activity across the country. At the end of April, major offensives by the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), an Al-Qaeda affiliate, and the predominantly Tuareg National Liberation Front of Azawad (FLA) overwhelmed government forces. The military has since lost control of key northern areas, including the critical city of Kidal.

Local testimonies reveal the devastating human cost. A resident of Téné, speaking on condition of anonymity, described the horror: “Ten of our children were killed by fire whose origin remains unknown. What was meant to be a moment of joy has turned into profound sorrow.”

A security source confirmed the drone strikes, attributing the tragedy to misidentification. “The attack targeted a procession of motorcycles, which likely drew the drones’ attention. At least nine lives were lost,” the source stated. A local official also reported around ten fatalities, calling the event a “true tragedy” for the community.

Security vacuum fuels civilian suffering

The Malian military’s actions reflect the broader struggle to contain spiraling violence. Since late April, jihadist groups have launched coordinated attacks, seizing territory and disrupting supply routes. The capital, Bamako, has faced a blockade on several strategic roads, with transport vehicles and goods set ablaze by militants.

In early May, attacks claimed by JNIM in central Mali resulted in significant casualties, further straining an already dire situation. Meanwhile, accusations of human rights abuses persist, with civil society organizations filing complaints regarding alleged violations by state forces and their allies.
