The Union du Peuple Gabonais (UPG) has reached a pivotal milestone in its political journey. During an Extraordinary Congress held in Libreville on Thursday, June 25, 2026, Marie Joselle Itsana was elected as the party’s president. This landmark decision marks the first time a woman has been chosen to lead this prominent political institution.
The election process was characterized by intense competition, reflecting the internal democratic energy of the party. Out of 43 total votes cast, Marie Joselle Itsana secured 23, narrowly defeating Roger Mouloungui, who received 20 votes.
A mission of reconciliation and renewal
In her first address, the new president acknowledged the diverse perspectives within the party, viewing them as a sign of vitality rather than weakness. She emphasized that while the Congress showcased different opinions, the ultimate goal is now collective progress. Marie Joselle Itsana accepted her new role with a sense of duty, recognizing the significant challenges ahead.
Her primary objective is to restore harmony within the ranks. By calling for an end to internal factions and “clan wars,” she aims to transition the UPG from a period of fragmentation into one of unified reconstruction. For the new leader, the priority is to turn the page on past conflicts to build a stronger future.
Restoring the party’s national influence
The strategic vision under this new leadership is to return the UPG to its former status as a dominant force in Gabon. Marie Joselle Itsana plans to strengthen the party’s presence across the national territory. Her platform is built on the pillars of sovereignty, social justice, transparency, and sustainable development.
Honoring the past while inspiring the youth
While focusing on modernization, the president paid tribute to the party’s foundations and its iconic founder, the late Pierre Mamboundou. She also honored the memory of activists who sacrificed for democratic ideals, stating that the current leadership must be worthy of this legacy while remaining responsible for what they leave to the next generation.
Looking forward, she urged younger members to take an active role in shaping the party’s strategic direction. According to the new president, a fresh chapter for the UPG begins immediately, driven by a commitment to renewal and active participation.
