The strong diplomatic ties between Mauritania and Gabon have taken another significant step forward following an important meeting in Libreville. In attendance was Messouda Bahama Mohamed Laghdaf, Special Envoy of Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, who presented an official invitation to her Gabonese counterpart, President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema.
During the high-level discussion, Laghdaf emphasized Mauritania’s commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation with Gabon, highlighting shared values such as solidarity, mutual respect, and ongoing dialogue on matters of mutual interest. The visit also served as the platform for formally announcing Mauritania’s candidacy for the position of Secretary-General of the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF).
The Mauritanian bid, championed by Dr. Koumba Ba, is built on three core pillars: coherence, balance, and direct utility to member states. This strategic vision aligns closely with Gabon’s own diplomatic priorities, particularly its emphasis on inclusive governance and continental solidarity.
President Oligui Nguema reaffirmed Gabon’s support for consensus-based decision-making and coordinated leadership within the OIF framework. The meeting underscored the seamless nature of relations between the two nations and Gabon’s active role in fostering stronger African partnerships within the Francophonie community.
This engagement reflects Gabon’s broader commitment to advancing a dynamic and development-oriented Francophonie, one that prioritizes collective progress and shared opportunities for all member states.
