In Rabat, Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita hosted UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, for his second official visit to the Kingdom.

The dialogue between the two officials centered on the significant and exemplary role the Kingdom of Morocco plays through its substantial contributions to United Nations peacekeeping operations.

Morocco’s involvement is rooted in a strategic royal vision, reflecting a consistent and long-standing dedication to UN peacekeeping missions that has been active since 1960.

Currently ranked as the ninth-largest troop-contributing nation to UN peacekeeping missions, Morocco holds a position of significant influence. The Kingdom is set to preside over the UN’s Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) in 2026 and serves as the coordinator for the Non-Aligned Movement (MNOAL) on peacekeeping matters. These responsibilities highlight the international community’s trust in Morocco’s capabilities concerning global peace and security issues.

Mr. Lacroix’s visit takes place amidst a period of significant reform within the United Nations. The Secretary-General has initiated major projects, including the “UN 80” initiative, which aims to streamline the UN Secretariat. This is complemented by a comprehensive strategic review of all peacekeeping operations and the international peace and security framework, with a clear objective to restore the primacy of political approaches in conflict management.
