Authorities are leaving nothing to chance, aiming to establish watertight coordination among all stakeholders.

Concerns run deep about potential fan violence surrounding the fixture. The match has been flagged as high-risk due to several factors: Lyon’s sizable Turkish expat community, the expected arrival of numerous Fenerbahçe supporters, and historical precedents. Authorities are particularly vigilant following past incidents involving Turkish clubs in French stadiums.

Recollections of the 2017 Europa League quarter-final between Lyon and Beşiktaş remain fresh in minds. That match, devoid of prior tensions between the clubs, saw volleys of projectiles exchanged in the north stand, prompting heavy police intervention. More recently, in October 2024, Beşiktaş supporters returned to Groupama Stadium for a Champions League group stage match, despite the fixture being classified as high-risk. Security restrictions limited attendance to just 30,000.

OL’s ticketing strategy to curb unchecked attendance

Upon learning of the draw, Olympique Lyonnais swiftly implemented a ticketing strategy to minimize the presence of unaccompanied Fenerbahçe fans. Starting Thursday morning, the club will exclusively open ticket sales to its season ticket holders, with prices beginning at €12 per ticket. Each season ticket holder may purchase up to four tickets for the August 26 showdown.

The club has emphasized to its 26,000 season ticket holders that reselling tickets is strictly prohibited. Violations carry severe consequences: season ticket holders face potential criminal liability if a ticket they purchased is used by someone engaging in misconduct within Groupama Stadium. Additionally, their season tickets could be revoked without refund.

After the initial season ticket holder phase, Olympique Lyonnais will open sales to its regular supporters based on club records. This phased approach, starting next Monday, will be contingent on ticket availability. By segmenting ticket sales, the club aims to prevent spectators who recently purchased tickets for the Champions League qualifier against Sparta Prague from gaining access to the stands.
