During the 85th session of the Executive Committee of the African Parliamentary Union (APU), Ousmane Sonko, President of Senegal’s National Assembly, held a pivotal meeting with Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde Kyenge, Chair of the Union’s Executive Committee. The high-level discussion took place on June 4th in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

The two leaders explored strategies to enhance the APU’s operational framework, addressing the growing challenges facing the African continent. Sonko emphasized the need for structural reforms to bolster the Union’s influence in shaping continental policy directions. His proposals centered on improving decision-making efficiency and ensuring greater alignment between the APU and the African Union (AU).

A key focus was the call for harmonized policies to eliminate fragmentation across African institutions. Sonko argued that such cohesion would strengthen collective action and amplify the continent’s voice in global affairs. The meeting underscored the urgency of reforming the APU’s governance to meet the evolving demands of African nations.
