Barely a week after regaining control of Anéfis in northern Mali, the Malian army and accompanying Russian mercenaries faced a fresh ambush in the same area on Saturday.

The military column’s return to Anéfis did little to secure the region. Just days after restoring government presence in this northern town, the convoy fell victim to an ambush in the same sector, demonstrating the persistent threat posed by jihadist groups despite recent counteroffensives.

The attack targeted both Malian troops and their Russian allies, underscoring the fragile security situation in northern Mali. Despite weeks of military operations, armed groups continue to disrupt stability and threaten key routes in the area.

The escalating violence raises concerns about the government’s ability to hold newly recaptured territories. With jihadist factions still active in the region, roadways and supply lines remain highly vulnerable to attacks.
