The prospect of dissolving the National Assembly continues to be a central point of political discussion across Senegal. During a Pastef rally held this Saturday in Linguère, Ousmane Sonko articulated a clear position on this possibility, simultaneously delivering a stern caution to President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
The leader of Pastef firmly believes that a dissolution of the National Assembly, followed by early legislative elections, would not benefit the current administration. He expressed absolute certainty that his political movement would emerge as the overwhelming victor in such a contest.
Sonko declared that his party would triumph decisively in any local elections. He further emphasized that dissolving the Assembly would inflict an even greater blow upon the ruling power, a situation his camp would, in fact, prefer, as they expect to achieve a crushing victory.
Ousmane Sonko went further, speculating on the potential for the head of state to be politically weakened should such an electoral defeat occur. He even suggested that President Faye might be compelled to concede defeat and step down before the end of his term in 2029.
Sonko urges supporters to remain calm
Beyond the electoral outlook, the president of Pastef also called upon his supporters to exercise vigilance and restraint. He specifically advised them against succumbing to any potential provocations.
Ousmane Sonko asserted that certain entities are attempting to incite reactions from his party’s activists as a pretext to implement measures against Pastef. He warned his followers to remain calm and alert, stating that efforts are underway to provoke Pastef’s youth, aiming to justify the party’s dissolution and the withdrawal of its official registration.
For the Pastef leader, if his militants successfully avoid provocations and maintain their mobilization, the upcoming electoral challenges could turn significantly in favor of his camp, which he described as a mere ‘walk in the park’.
