In a groundbreaking announcement coinciding with Morocco’s Throne Day celebrations, the United States has unequivocally stated its support for Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara. The declaration was made by the American president in a formal message addressed to His Majesty King Mohammed VI, marking a historic milestone in the long-standing alliance between the two nations.
In his message, the US president extended warm congratulations to the Moroccan monarch and the people of Morocco, highlighting the 250-year-old bond between the two countries. «This year, we celebrate 250 years of American history and enduring friendship with Morocco—a partnership rooted in mutual trust and respect,» the statement read.
Unwavering support for Morocco’s autonomy plan
Addressing the Western Sahara issue, the US president reaffirmed Washington’s unequivocal stance: «Any alternative to the Moroccan autonomy proposal only prolongs the status quo, which is unacceptable. This dispute must conclude now, and the United States will continue to drive progress toward this goal,» the message emphasised.
The president went on to praise Morocco’s leadership in fostering regional stability, stating: «Your Majesty’s wise leadership stands as a cornerstone of stability. Morocco’s steadfast commitment to peace, countering extremism, and safeguarding both American and Moroccan security—including through its pivotal role in the Abraham Accords—reflects a partnership of immense value to the United States. Together, we will also work to ensure the security of the Sahel region.»
Economic collaboration takes centre stage
The American president also underscored the potential of bilateral economic ties, noting: «Your Vision for growth unlocks unprecedented opportunities for prosperity for both our peoples and economies.» He further announced that Washington would prioritise economic and social development initiatives in collaboration with Morocco, including within Western Sahara.
Looking ahead, the US president outlined a vision for future cooperation: «Reliable American technology and innovation will continue to serve as trusted partners to Morocco over the next 250 years, across all strategic sectors—including energy, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, and defence.»
Concluding his message, the American leader expressed optimism about the future: «Together, we will build a new era—one that places the interests of our peoples at the forefront.»
