Yesterday, President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema officially opened Gabon’s inaugural data center, a pivotal development for the nation’s digital landscape. Located within the Nkok Special Economic Zone, this state-of-the-art facility was brought to fruition by ST Digital Data Center Services. The launch event also featured the signing of a crucial Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Digital Economy, Digitalization, and Innovation and ST Digital, aimed at fostering the growth of Gabonese startups.
This dual undertaking is designed to bolster local data hosting capabilities, enhance cybersecurity protocols, and accelerate the country’s overall digital transformation. Adhering to stringent international Tier III certification standards, the new infrastructure is set to significantly improve national data storage capacity, facilitate advanced cloud computing services, and provide robust support for both government administrations and private enterprises. Ultimately, it serves to fortify Gabon’s digital sovereignty. President Nguema’s commitment to steering Gabon towards a robust and self-reliant digital future is clearly evident in this strategic move.
The collaborative agreement ensures that emerging businesses will gain preferential access to a suite of professional digital services. Selected startups are poised to receive a dedicated virtual machine, 120 GB of SSD storage, 8 GB of RAM, four virtual processors, a public IP address, an SSL certificate, comprehensive technical support, and advantageous pricing structures.
The Ministry will play a pivotal role in identifying eligible beneficiaries, actively promoting local data hosting solutions, and spearheading initiatives to raise awareness about cybersecurity. Laïka Mba, the Director General of ST Digital, emphasized the profound significance of this development, stating, ”Having a national data center in Gabon transcends mere technological triumph; it represents a definitive act of sovereignty.” She further elaborated, ”It offers the sacred assurance that our state secrets, national archives, public services, and the personal data of our citizens are no longer reliant on foreign infrastructures.”
ST Digital is committed to safeguarding data security and providing ongoing technical assistance. This strategic public-private partnership is expected to foster the creation and local hosting of innovative digital solutions within Gabon, thereby cultivating an environment highly conducive to technological innovation, job creation, and increased investment.
