Adré’s solar plant: a transformative project for local communities

The inauguration ceremony in Adré, regional capital of Ouaddaï’s Assoungha department, brought together local leaders, technical partners, and community members to celebrate a project designed to revolutionize energy access. The event was led by the department’s prefect, highlighting the collaborative effort behind this initiative.

The solar power plant, developed as part of Chad’s national electrification strategy, aims to enhance electricity supply, elevate living standards, and stimulate economic growth in the region. Mayor Ahmat Abderrahim of Adré emphasized the project’s strategic importance, calling it a testament to the authorities’ dedication to energizing the city.

National leadership drives renewable energy progress

Younous Daoussa Mahamat, Director General of the Rural Electrification and Energy Management Agency, framed the inauguration as more than just a ceremonial event. He described it as the realization of a political vision—one that fulfills the promise of making energy access a tangible right for all Chadians.

According to Mahamat, the hybrid solar plant in Adré was commissioned through direct instruction from Chad’s President, Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno. He stressed that the project exemplifies the Head of State’s commitment to balanced national development, ensuring no citizen or community is left behind. The statement underscored the President’s resolve: no region should remain in darkness, and no young person’s potential should be stifled by energy scarcity.

The facility features 4,800 photovoltaic modules, each generating 585 watts, for a total installed capacity of 2.808 megawatts-peak. It also includes a battery storage system of 7.52 megawatt-hours, two 500 KVA backup generators, and an extensive network of 5 kilometers of medium-voltage lines and 10 kilometers of low-voltage distribution.

Local voices praise the initiative

Prefect Dillo Bergou of Assoungha expressed the community’s deep gratitude to President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno for his forward-thinking leadership and sustained investment in the region. He also praised the collective efforts of all stakeholders involved in bringing the project to fruition.

The ceremony culminated in a symbolic ribbon-cutting and a guided tour of the plant, marking a new chapter in Chad’s renewable energy journey. This achievement reinforces the government’s resolve to position solar energy as a cornerstone of the country’s sustainable development agenda.
