The governments of Algeria and Chad have formalized a new agreement in N’Djamena, Chad, to streamline infrastructure development projects, including the long-awaited trans-Saharan highway. The deal, signed on Thursday, aims to accelerate the implementation of bilateral cooperation initiatives in public works and infrastructure, reinforcing economic ties between the two nations.

Abdelkader Djellaoui, Algeria’s Minister of Public Works and Basic Infrastructure, and Amir Idriss Kourda, Chad’s Minister of Infrastructure, Road Unblocking, and Maintenance, inked the accord during a coordination meeting in N’Djamena. The gathering coincided with a working visit by the Algerian delegation to Chad, where key stakeholders from both countries reviewed progress on previously signed agreements.

The meeting was attended by senior officials from Algeria’s Agency for International Cooperation in Solidarity and Development, the Algerian ambassador to Chad, executives from the Cosider Group and Algeria’s National Public Works Company (SNTP). On the Chadian side, the delegation included the Minister of State for Infrastructure, along with senior advisors and technical experts.

Rapid progress on trans-Saharan highway and bilateral pacts

Chadian officials highlighted a rapid momentum in executing the bilateral agreements, noting significant strides since the initial accords were finalized in Algiers on April 22. Key milestones include joint technical assessments and the initiation of feasibility studies for the trans-Saharan highway’s route through Chad.

The agreement underscores a shared commitment to enhancing regional connectivity and economic integration, with both nations prioritizing the development of critical infrastructure to bolster trade and transportation across the Sahel.
