Following the directives of President Paul Biya, the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, Joseph Beti Assomo, Minister Delegate at the Presidency in charge of Defense, has taken a decisive step to bolster Cameroon’s military capabilities.

A landmark military financial cooperation agreement has been officially ratified between Cameroon and Turkey in Ankara. This strategic pact, signed by the Cameroonian Minister of Defense, Joseph Beti Assomo, and his Turkish counterpart, Yaşar Güler, represents a significant evolution in the bilateral relations between the two countries.

The signing ceremony also saw the participation of Turkish Deputy Minister Musa Heybet. The official documentation outlines a framework designed to strengthen financial and military collaboration mechanisms while deepening the cooperative principles between Ankara and Yaoundé in sectors of mutual interest.

In addition to the formal signing, Minister Beti Assomo conducted an official tour of the Milli Savunma Üniversitesi (MSÜ), Turkey’s National Defense University, which is a premier institution for training military leadership. The discussions at the university centered on three primary strategic pillars: the advancement of bilateral military cooperation, the specialized training of Cameroonian Armed Forces personnel, and the overall strengthening of strategic ties.

This diplomatic mission builds upon a well-established partnership. For several years, Turkey has been providing education to Cameroonian military personnel within MSÜ institutions. During a previous meeting in Yaoundé in May 2025, Joseph Beti Assomo expressed gratitude toward Ankara for the tuition-free training of Cameroonian cadets and non-commissioned officers in Turkish military academies.

The agreement finalized on June 3, 2026, elevates this partnership to a higher operational and financial level. By securing this deal, Cameroon continues to expand its network of strategic allies. Joining the ranks of traditional partners like France, the United States, and Israel, Turkey is now positioned as a top-tier military ally for Yaoundé, offering a comprehensive approach that integrates funding, professional training, and operational coordination.
