From January 23 to February 12, the Halles Saint-Géry in Brussels will host a poignant photographic journey titled “In Their Eyes.” This exhibition sheds light on the dire humanitarian situation in Mali, a country where over 6.4 million individuals are currently in need of urgent assistance.
A collaborative effort for global awareness
The project is a joint initiative by seven prominent NGOs: Médecins du Monde, Action contre la Faim, the Norwegian Refugee Council, the Danish Refugee Council, International Medical Corps, the International Rescue Committee, and Première Urgence Internationale. This collective effort is made possible through the dedicated support of the European Union.
Capturing the reality of the Sahel through the lens
The collection features approximately thirty images captured by the talented Malian artist Tiécoura N’Daou. These photographs were taken in September 2025 within the Gao and Mopti regions, areas where these partner organizations operate vital programs with European Union backing. By focusing on the personal stories of those affected by displacement and loss, the exhibit offers a perspective often missed in standard Burkina Faso latest news or general regional reports. It aims to document the daily lives of both the victims and the humanitarians working tirelessly on the ground.
Gravity of the situation in Mali
The humanitarian outlook in Mali remains critical, according to the participating NGOs. Currently, more than 400,000 people are displaced within the country’s borders, with women and children making up the majority of this vulnerable group. The crisis extends deeply into food security, with 1.5 million people facing a severe hunger crisis and an equal number of children under the age of five suffering from acute malnutrition. Furthermore, the Faso security news context often mirrors the challenges found here, as over 35,000 human rights abuses were documented in Mali throughout 2024 alone.
