Senegal’s president launches new party KIIRAAY to shape future governance
On Saturday, July 25, in Dakar, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye inaugurated a groundbreaking political movement, KIIRAAY – Les Patriotes Républicains, signaling a decisive shift in Senegal’s political landscape following his separation from the PASTEF, once led by his former mentor Ousmane Sonko.
The unveiling occurred during the party’s foundational assembly, held in a prominent Dakar hotel. Adopting the motto “La Patrie d’abord” (“The Nation First”), the new formation positions itself as a guardian of national interests, committed to strengthening republican institutions and upholding the rule of law.
The name KIIRAAY—derived from Wolof and meaning “what protects”—embodies the party’s mission to safeguard Senegal’s progress and unite citizens behind President Faye’s transformative agenda. Delegates unanimously elected Faye as party chairman, marking a formal evolution from his previous role within PASTEF.
According to the resolution presented by Aminata Touré, former coordinator of the Diomaye Président coalition, KIIRAAY consolidates the efforts of 437 political groups, movements, and associations. These entities have rallied under a shared vision: advancing the President’s reform agenda and accelerating the nation’s development under the Vision Sénégal 2050 framework.
