The 16th general assembly of the Association de soutien au village de Forgho, located in northern Mali, was recently held in Villefranche-de-Rouergue. This meeting served as a crucial update on the ongoing efforts to assist the region during a period of intense instability.

L’association continue d’œuvrer au Mali.

A worsening humanitarian context

Opening the session, the president, Marie-Jo Mennelet, spoke with heavy emotion regarding the current state of Mali. Life in the country has become increasingly arduous, with local populations facing a combination of jihadist threats, severe shortages, and frequent disruptions to water and electricity services. These hardships are compounded by rising inflation and extreme temperatures, making daily survival a constant struggle.

Commitment to education and health

Despite these daunting obstacles, the association maintains a steadfast connection with its partners in Forgho and Bamako. A significant achievement highlighted during the moral report is that the schools in Forgho and Kotchekaraï have remained operational, standing in stark contrast to many other educational institutions in central and northern Mali that have been forced to close.

While no new sponsorships were initiated this year, existing commitments remain active thanks to the unwavering loyalty of donors and members. This financial support has been instrumental in providing:

  • Essential school supplies for the new academic year.
  • Funding for school canteens and national exam fees (DEF).
  • Vital medications and agricultural seeds for local farmers.
  • Infrastructure repairs within the villages and school facilities.

Financial resilience and community support

The association’s activities were limited this year, but financial health remains stable. Revenue continues to flow in through membership fees and generous contributions gathered during local cultural events, such as concerts and theater performances. These funds are prioritized for educational aid, medical supplies, and support for an orphanage in Bamako, as well as providing occasional relief to teachers and families in need.

The assembly concluded with the unanimous approval of the moral and financial reports and the re-election of the board members. The session ended on a positive note with a convivial gathering, reinforcing the bond of solidarity that links Villefranche-de-Rouergue to the people of Mali.
